From her perch on the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, freshman U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology will be sending almost $4 million to South Florida.

Last week, DOT unveiled plans to send $3,974,400 in federal funding to University Transportation Center (UTC) projects in Florida.

“I am pleased to announce funding that will support sorely-needed repairs to our crumbling infrastructure,” Mucarsel-Powell said towards the end of last week. “As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I will continue to be a strong advocate for South Florida and make sure the federal government’s tax dollars are being put to good use.”

Most of those funds–$2,574,300– will be going to the University of Florida’s STRIDE Center – of which Florida International University (FIU) is a consortium member.

Mucarsel-Powell defeated U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., in November, flipping a South Florida congressional seat and helping the Democrats take the House. Representing a swing district, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is already planning on making her a top target in the 2020 election cycle.

FIU will also be getting $1,400,100 for its Accelerated Bridge Construction program.
