The Cane Corso is the most popular dog breed in 20 out of 21 major cities in Florida.

Research by pet financial assistance site MyPetChild analyzed a list of 284 dog breeds recognized by The American Kennel Club and used Google’s data to reveal the most searched for dog breed in each major US city.

The Cane Corso was found to be the most searched dog breed in 20 out of 21 major cities in Florida, including Jacksonville, Port St. Lucie and Pembroke Pines. Hialeah was the only major city in Florida where another dog–the Golden Retriever–was more popular than Cane Corso.

The Cane Corso is an Italian breed of mastiff, whose lineage dates back to ancient Roman times, and whose name roughly translates from Latin to mean “Bodyguard Dog.” Corsi, whose lifespan is between 9 – 12 years, are typically muscular in frame and their protective nature makes them a great family dog, provided they are properly socialized.

The French Bulldog was found to be the second most popular, ranking as the second most searched for breed in 19 cities.

The French Bulldog is a result of crossbreeding Toy Bulldogs imported from England with French Ratters. The breed, which was the most popular in 2022 by number of American Kennel Club registrations, typically have a large, squared head, and heavy wrinkles above a short snubby nose. French Bulldogs are also characterized by their bat like ears and typically live for between 10 – 12 years.

The Golden Retriever was found to be another popular breed, ranking as the second most searched in seven cities.

This breed of powerfully built Scottish gundog, is most notably characterized by their medium-length golden coat, as their name suggests. Intelligent and affectionate in nature, Golden Retrievers are notoriously hard workers and are often used as guides for the blind, in search and rescue operations and for hunting and fieldwork.

A spokesperson for MyPetChild commented on the study.

“Overall, across 328 major US cities, the most searched for dog breed was found to be the Cane Corso, which came out top in 297 of the cities, the equivalent of 91% of cities overall,” said the spokesperson for MyPetChild. “Unfortunately, this Italian mastiff has garnered somewhat of a negative reputation, and their popularity online might partly be attributed to those looking for a dog that can deter home intruders. In reality, the breed is can be very affectionate and gentle, and make for great family pets when properly socialized and handled.”

284 dog breeds officially recognized by the American Kennel Club were included in the study. Each was entered into Google Keyword Planner to find the number of monthly searches for each breed in the 328 most populated cities in America.
