While he is starting his second term in the U.S. House, U.S. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Fla., had already had the honor as serving as vice chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and he showed last week that he intends to continue to focus on international issues.
In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, discussed the continuing threats faced by the United States from terrorist groups operating in Syria and Afghanistan, and on the risks that a hasty withdrawal of American forces from either country poses to our hard-won gains and the security of the United States and our allies.
Trump has thrown open the possibility of declaring an emergency to get the funds for the wall and U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said on Thursday that he backs the idea to help “keep the government open, secure our border, and provide adequate disaster relief funding for Florida and Puerto Rico.”
Shalala unveiled the “Venezuela Arms Restriction Act," insisting these “tools are often used by the illegitimate Maduro regime to attack its own people, often with lethal consequences.”
U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., the only freshman Republican on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee and who served several combat tours as a Green Beret in Afghanistan, took to the national airwaves to weigh in on the Trump administration and the Taliban agreeing “in principle” on a peace deal.
On Tuesday, Mucarsel-Powell unveiled the “Humanitarian Assistance to the Venezuelan People Act” which “would call on the Trump Administration to form a long-term humanitarian aid strategy; provide up to $150 million in humanitarian aid directly to the Venezuelan people; and direct the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to make increased humanitarian assistance a priority of the international community.”
Rubio appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and NBC’s “Meet the Press" to praise Trump’s handling of Venezuela, even as opposition to the Maduro regime continues to grow.
“This is serious,” Waltz added. “We need to secure our border, we need to reform our immigration system, we need to reopen the government, and I’m standing here in an empty building ready to do that.”
Rubio joined fellow Republican U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas in sending a letter to Trump on Tuesday, calling on the president to “send the worst of the ISIS fighters currently detained in Syria to Guantanamo Bay” and insisting that “doing so would prevent these dangerous terrorists from being released to commit further acts of terror.”
The Kissimmee Democrat and U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla. have joined together to file a bill which would allow Venezuelan nationals to file for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) which would allow them to remain in the U.S. until that South American country’s political situation is sorted out.
