AAA released a study on Monday which found the average gallon of gas in Florida cost $2.71 on Sunday, down four cents in the past week but still nine cents higher than this time last year.
With the highest gas prices seen in March over the last five years now over, the average gallon of gas in Florida cost $2.75 on Sunday, up 13 cents more than a week ago and almost 30 cents higher than a month ago.
On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., wrote U.S. Transportation Sec. Elaine Chao, calling on her to grant funding through the Nationally Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects Program to complete Phase II of the Tamiami Trail Modification Next Step project.
State Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, introduced the bill which let illegal immigrants use documents like an unexpired foreign passport or a birth certificate from another nation to get a drivers license.
"Florida drivers may see gas prices rise another 10 cents this week," said Jenkins. "Both planned and unplanned refinery maintenance, rising demand, and the switch to summer gasoline continue to contribute to the seasonal springtime jump at the pump. Based on current conditions, gas prices will likely peak sometime between Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day weekend."
Refineries are conducting seasonal maintenance leading to reduced output. Summer-blend gasoline is hitting the market, as required by the EPA, in effort to reduce smog levels. Because this blend of gasoline requires more additives, it is more expensive to produce.”
"Gasoline supplies are beginning to tighten as refineries conduct seasonal maintenance and switch to summer-blend gasoline," Jenkins said. "Wholesale gasoline prices rose 10 cents late last week. The state average will likely rise 5-10 cents this week, as a result."
County residents will vote on May 21 on a one-cent sales tax which would remain in effect for 30 years to fund transportation projects in Osceola County.
