Both of Florida’s U.S. senators–Republicans Marco Rubio and Rick Scott–threw their support behind U.S Sen. Tom Cotton’s, R-Ark., proposal “to bar federal funds from being used to establish a Disinformation Governance Board at the Department of Homeland Security.”
Cotton brought out the bill on Monday with the Florida Republicans joining 15 other GOP senators in co-sponsoring the proposal.
“The Biden administration wants a government agency dedicated to cracking down on what its subjects can say, an idea popular with Orwellian governments everywhere. This board is unconstitutional and un-American—my bill puts a stop to it,” said Cotton.
“Joe Biden is using DHS to create thought police and it should scare the living daylights out of every American. The president claims to care about fighting disinformation, but he and his administration have repeatedly lied to the American people and even called on social media companies to censor and silence American voices. We need to be very clear: this isn’t about a commitment to the truth or keeping families safe. This is Joe Biden and the Democrats using the federal government to police speech. Biden’s thought police is something straight out of Orwell’s 1984 and I will do everything in my power to destroy this attack on free speech. I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this important bill,” Scott said.
The bill was sent to the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. So far, there is no companion measure over in the U.S. House. With Democrats controlling both chambers of Capitol Hill, the bill is not expected to pass.
Rubio offered a piece on the matter at National Review on Tuesday.
Under the guise of homeland security, the Biden administration is setting up a new ‘Disinformation Governance Board,’”Rubio wrote. “To maintain their grip on power, authoritarians must control the spread of thoughts and ideas. Discrediting speech that threatens the ruling class is one way to establish that control — and what better way to do that than labelling it disinformation? …For President Biden to take America down the same path as [China, Cuba, and Nicaragua] is alarming.
“Administration officials say their disinformation board is necessary to protect American democracy. However, federal censorship is no guarantee against real disinformation,” he added. “Washington bureaucrats’ track record at discerning fact from fiction is dismal, and Biden’s new censorship czar, Nina Jankowicz, is no exception. In 2020, she dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop story as a ‘Trump campaign product.’ Now, President Biden’s son is under official investigation….
“Biden’s new government censorship board will only make things worse, not least because it will set up Marxist radicals in the administration as the final arbiters of what is true,” Rubio continued. “I have lived my entire life around people who fled from countries ruled by Marxist dictators…. Theirs is a cautionary tale, and we are fooling ourselves if we think that can’t change.
“A government disinformation board led by a person who ‘shudder[s]’ at the thought of ‘free speech . . . absolutists’ is a step toward tyranny…. It has to be defunded,” Rubio insisted.
