Looking to fend off what would be a major upset in a Central Florida congressional race, a GOP PAC launched a new TV spot on Friday taking aim at Democrat Kristen Carlson.
With U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., retiring, Carlson faces Republican state Rep. Ross Spano in what has, traditionally, not been a competitive district. Ross won 57.5 percent to 42.5 percent in 2016 and carried more than 60 percent in 2014. In 2012, Ross didn’t even face opposition in the general election.
But polls have shown a close contest between Spano and Carlson with the Democrat outraising the Republican. This being the case, the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a super PAC connected to the House Republican leadership, launched a new ad running on TV and online trying to link Carlson with U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“Nancy Pelosi’s liberal allies are funding Kristen Carlson’s campaign because she would be a rubber stamp for Pelosi’s tax-raising agenda,” said Courtney Alexander, a spokeswoman for CLF. “Carlson supports raising taxes on middle-class families and even supports a big-government spending scheme that could nearly double the national debt.”
“Nancy Pelosi’s liberal allies are funding Kristen Carlson’s campaign,” the narrator of the ad says. “Why? Because Carlson supports Pelosi’s tax-raising agenda. Carlson supports raising taxes on middle-class families…and opposed tax relief for small businesses. Kristen Carlson even supports a big-government spending scheme that could lead to doubling the national debt and trillions in new taxes. Nancy Pelosi and Kristen Carlson would make you pay more.”
