Florida’s History with Democratic Presidential Candidates

In 25 different Presidential Elections, the majority of voters in Florida voted for the Democratic Presidential candidate. During the past 20 years, Florida voted for Bill Clinton in 1996 and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. Prior to the 1996 election, Florida voters voted for the Republican Party for both of Ronald Reagan’s terms (1980,1984) as well as George H.W. Bush’s 1988 campaign and 1992 campaign. Jimmy Carter was Florida’s choice in 1976, before the Democrats’ 20-year drought.

On an interesting side note, Florida has voted for Republican governors since Jeb Bush was elected for his first term in 1998. The last Democratic governor of Florida was Buddy MacKay, who served as interim Governor less than 30 days after former Democrat Governor Lawton Chiles died of a heart attack just a few weeks before the end of his term in 1998.
