This week, U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., one of the co-chairs of the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC), brought out a bill honoring the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a monument in the Capitol Complex.
Frankel’s proposal has the support of her fellow leaders of the DWC including U.S. Reps. Veronica Escobar, D-Tex., Brenda Lawrence, D-Mich., and Jackie Speier, D-Calif. U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., is also backing the bill. Over in the upper chamber, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., is championing the companion bill.
“Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer and inspiration who spent her career fighting for gender equality and standing up for women’s rights,” said Frankel. “A monument to her in our Capitol will allow future visitors to recognize and reflect upon her remarkable contributions.”
“The notorious RBG was tiny in stature but a giant in bringing women’s equality to our country by first using the courts to file lawsuits and then on the court opining on equality for all. Her dissents are legendary, her passion for equal rights uncompromising. It is only fitting that we immortalize this feminist icon with a statue in the Capitol that honors her legacy and educates future generations of her profound contributions,” said Speier.
“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a tireless champion for women, justice, and equality. Even when so many people told her no, she defied the odds and preserved,” said Lawrence. “Throughout her long and storied career, Justice Ginsburg paved the way for countless women and girls. Her life-changing words and actions will live on in the hearts of Americans across the country. At the start of Women’s History Month, I’m grateful to join my colleagues in introducing this bill to honor the life and legacy of Justice Ginsburg.”
“Justice Ginsburg was a pioneer and trailblazer who fiercely advocated for gender equality and women’s rights,” said Escobar. “This Women’s History Month, I am proud to partner with Democratic Women’s Caucus colleagues and Congressman Krishnamoorthi to honor the life and legacy of the Great Dissenter in the U.S. Capitol.”
“Today, America is a more just, fair, and equal nation because of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” said Krishnamoorthi.. “Placing a monument in her honor at the Capitol will enshrine her legacy of shattering glass ceilings and fighting tirelessly for women’s rights. Her leadership will be sorely missed on the nation’s highest court, but her contributions to American jurisprudence will endure for generations to come.”
“Justice Ginsburg’s dedication to our country’s values and ideals is an example for every American. She was an icon and a trailblazer who dedicated her life to opening doors for women at a time when so many insisted on keeping them shut. The Capitol is our most recognizable symbol of Democracy, a place where people from across our country have their voices represented and heard. It is only fitting that the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives honor her life and service by establishing a monument in the Capitol,” said Klobuchar.
Frankel’s bill was sent to the U.S. House Committee on House Administration on Monday.
