Last week, two Democrats in Florida Legislature–state Sen. Lori Berman of Delray Beach and Rep. Joe Casello of Boynton Beach, showcased their bill to “exempt the sales tax on home improvements that help seniors age in place.”

This marks the third year in a row where the legislators have pushed the bill.

“It would also extend the sales tax exemption to others who may need similar care, such as wounded veterans or persons recovering from surgery. The tax-exempt items would include bed transfer handles, bed rails, grab bars, and shower seats, all of which make homes safer and allow those in need to maintain more independence,” their offices noted.

“I’m excited to continue working on this initiative with Senator Berman,” said Casello. “My district is home to many seniors who are fiercely independent and want to remain in their homes as long as possible.

“Although everyone has been affected by COVID, our seniors have been hit particularly hard. It is important that we do what we can to help them regain the independent lifestyle they deserve as our country and state begin to recover,” he added.

“By helping the elderly to afford equipment that allows them to remain in their homes, we’re helping them maintain dignity, self-sufficiency, and their overall well-being,” said Berman.

The Florida Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the Florida Council on Aging and the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans are all backing the proposal.

“The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans is pleased to support this legislation, which allows seniors to age in place by exempting from taxes certain items for their homes,” said Bill Sauers, the president of the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans.

Berman’s bill was sent to the Senate Children, Families, and Elder Affairs; Finance and Tax; and Appropriations Committees. So far, the House version has not been sent to any committees.
