Rick Scott Calls for National Voter ID Laws, Pushes Vote-By-Mail Proposal

“I filed the VOTER Act this fall because I feared there would be issues this cycle with the influx of mail-in voting and a lack of standards in many states. If states fail to comply with these common sense measures, they won’t receive federal funding for elections. It’s that simple. Florida’s election system works well, and my goal is to make sure what works in my state is incorporated into election systems across the country so voters decide the outcomes of elections – not the courts,” Scott said.

Last week, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., called for national Voter ID requirements and tried to focus some attention for his national vote-by-mail proposal.

Scott weighed in on Wednesday and called for national Voter ID laws.

“This election has shown we need major reforms to our election systems, including Voter ID laws across the nation, to protect against fraud and rebuild the American people’s trust in fair outcomes,” Scott said.

Back in September, Scott brought out the “Verifiable, Orderly, & Timely Election Results (VOTER) Act” which, he insists, will “establish uniform standards for vote-by-mail systems across the country and ensure the timely and efficient counting of ballots, with important safeguards to prevent fraud.”

On Wednesday, Scott showcased his proposal.

When the senator introduced the bill, Scott’s office offered some of the rationales behind his proposal.

“Currently, mail-based absentee voting in federal elections is governed by a patchwork of state laws, with varying deadlines for requesting, returning and receiving mailed ballots. As states pursue the expanded use of mail-in ballots, the VOTER Act will ensure the security, reliability and orderly conduct of federal elections. The bill also creates a deadline for state election officials to tally and report the election results to avoid prolonged uncertainty in the outcome of a federal election,” Scott’s office noted.

“Voting is fundamental to our democracy and it is a sacred right that we must protect and cherish,” Scott said when he introduced the bill. “I always say we need 100 percent participation and 0 percent fraud in our elections. Florida has absentee voting and it works well. But the standards for mail-in voting vary widely across the country, causing confusion and a distrust in the system. We need standards nationwide to ensure voters decide the outcomes of elections – not the courts. We can’t wait weeks or months to find out the results of this election or any election in our future – a scenario made all the more likely by the Democrats’ push to change laws late in the game and eliminate standards that protect against fraud. The VOTER Act will create uniform standards for voting-by-mail, provide important protections against fraud, and make sure we have a timely federal election result. We need to pass this bill now to ensure a smooth and secure election.”

The bill would create standards for voting by mail in federal elections, including having vote-by-mail ballots requested 21 days before the election and having them turned in when polls close on Election Day. Scott’s proposal would also make voters attest they are the person to whom the ballot was sent and that they will also not vote in person. Under Scott’s proposal, all mail-in ballots must be counted within 24 hours of when polls close.

Scott’s bill was sent to the U.S. Senate Rules and Administration Committee back in September. So far, there are no cosponsors in the Senate. There is no companion measure over in the U.S. House.

Get rid of the mail in balloting. Get rid of ballot harvesting. Require voter ID. Reduce early voting to no more than 1 week before election day (if it’s important to you, you’ll make time to get to the polls). Require voters to pick up an absentee ballot from the supervisor of elections (again, if it’s that important to you, you’ll make the time. Make arrangements, perhaps using the sheriff’s department, to deliver to the truly infirmed). Require absentee ballots to be returned before early voting begins, and require they be tabulated (but not published), before election day.

Amen! Ask the Senate Republicans why they act like Democrats?

Barcode each absentee ballot, scan when sent from election office and scan when returned. Physically verify the signature with signature in election data base.
Only voting with picture and identification..

We definitely need election reform. Federal laws that have to be obeyed by all states–what we have now is utter insanity. Governors & Secretaries of State doing asinine changes in their own laws at a whim, right before election deadlines. Where is another Republican senator to co-sponsor this bill of Sen. Scott?

The Senate “must” establish Federal Election Laws that “all” states must obey! As a veteran I am appalled at the Fraud plainly committed in our 2020 Presidential election.

The Constitution clearly leaves election regulation to the states, which is likely why Scott’s bill is “lost in commitee”. Florida *does* get it right in counting early/mail-in ballots AS THEY COME IN, which this year meant most of their work was done before the polls even opened. States like PA that weren’t allowed to START counting until Election Day, given the huge number of mail-ins, were the problem. And you MUST give some slack for military mail-ins, as long as they’re postmarked by Election Day. With two kids in the service, I don’t want to see them disenfranchised, thank you very much.
