Senate Approves Two of Joe Biden’s U.S. Attorney Nominees in Florida

This week, the U.S. Senate approved President Joe Biden’s nomination of two U.S. attorneys in Florida.

Back in September, the White House announced the nomination of “Roger B. Handberg, of Florida, to be United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida for the term of four years, vice Maria Chapa Lopez, resigned” and “Markenzy Lapointe, of Florida, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida for the term of four years, vice Ariana Fajardo Orshan, resigned.”

The Senate approved Handberg and Lapointe without opposition. They will both serve four-year terms.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., first expressed his support for Lapointe back at the start of 2021 and championed the nominees when they were announced.

“Markenzy Lapointe and Roger Handberg have served their communities and country with distinction. The president made the right decision by naming them to these important posts and I am happy the Senate confirmed them. I expect both will respect the Constitution and uphold the rule of law without fear or favor,” Rubio said after the Senate votes.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., has also been a vocal champion of Lapointe and she weighed in on the confirmations..

“Markenzy Lapointe represents the American Dream! After more than two years of relentless advocacy and pushing for the confirmation of Markenzy Lapointe as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, I am overjoyed the Senate has confirmed his nomination.

“As a former U.S. Marine, ex-federal prosecutor, and product of Miami-Dade, Markenzy Lapointe shares a unique perspective on the issues plaguing our communities and brings a clear vision along with a wealth of experience to lead this critical office. Confirmed to serve as the first Haitian American U.S. Attorney, Mr. Lapointe is shattering glass ceilings,” Wilson said.

“I am confident in his ability to uphold the rule of law and dedication to fighting for a more equitable criminal justice system. I know his extensive experience, unquestionable conviction, and home-grown commitment to our diverse community will guide his success as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida,” she added. “With this appointment, I am proud to see that the office of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida will finally seat a trusted and seasoned litigator to take the helm in one of the nation’s most diverse regions.”
