Senate Passes Rick Scott’s, Marco Rubio’s Resolution Honoring Tampa Bay for Winning Stanley Cup

Last week, the U.S. Senate passed U.S. Sen. Rick Scott’s, R-Fla., resolution honoring the Tampa Bay Lightning winning the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Stanley Cup this year.

Last month, with the support of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Scott introduced the resolution to congratulate the hockey team.

“After years of hard work, a difficult season away from family and playing without fans in the seats, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup win gave Floridians a much-needed reason to celebrate,” Scott said. “I was proud to join my colleague, Senator Rubio, to introduce this resolution congratulating the Lightning for bringing the Stanley Cup back to Tampa Bay, and I applaud its unanimous passage in the Senate. Go Bolts!”

“I am grateful that my colleagues joined Senator Scott and I in recognizing the Tampa Bay Lightning‘s incredible 2020 season, the team, and the entire organization on winning the Stanley Cup,” Rubio said. “I am proud that Tampa, Florida is home to this amazing organization, and it is fitting that this resolution honors their incredible achievement.”

The Senate passed the resolution on a voice vote on Thursday.

Over on the other side of Capitol Hill, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., introduced a resolution honoring the team. Most of the Florida delegation–U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., Kathy Castor, D-Fla., Charlie Crist, D-Fla., Val Demings, D-Fla., Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., Neal Dunn, R-Fla., Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., Al Lawson, D-Fla., Brian Mast, R-Fla., Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., Bill Posey, R-Fla., John Rutherford, R-Fla., Darren Soto, D-Fla., Ross Spano, R-Fla., Michael Waltz, R-Fla., Dan Webster, R-Fla., and Ted Yoho, R-Fla.–are co-sponsoring the proposal.

“The Tampa Bay Lightning had an incredible season and made Floridians proud with this year’s unforgettable Stanley Cup win,” Steube said when he introduced the resolution. “The Stanley Cup was the first major sports trophy awarded since the pandemic began, representing a truly historic and challenging season where players, coaches, and staff spent over two months away from their homes and families.

“On behalf of the loyal Bolts fans in our community and around our state, I am honored to introduce this resolution with my colleagues to commemorate the Tampa Bay Lightning’s historic achievement on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives,” Steube added.

“The Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup championship is one of the brightest spots of 2020 so far,” Castor said. “Our Tampa Bay neighbors need a bit of joy, and I’m grateful for the heart, determination, and grit of the Lightning in bringing home the Cup. Go Bolts!”

Tampa Bay beat the Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup finals at the end of last month. This marks the second championship for Tampa Bay which, as Scott noted, also won the Stanley Cup in the 2003-2004 season.

Steube’s resolution is currently before the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee.
