“Youth diversion” refers to programs and policies that steer children away from the traditional criminal justice process. In Florida, diversion can happen when a police officer gives a young person a warning or civil citation in lieu of an arrest, or when youth are referred to community-based diversion services rather than being detained or adjudicated.
Nikki Fried Unveils Changes to Make FDACS More Inclusive, Including Reforming Law Enforcement Reforms
On Thursday, state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried announced a series of policy and procedure changes within the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) which, her office insists, will “create a more racially inclusive and equitable state agency” including changes on “the use of force, de-escalation, and excessive force intervention by the department’s law enforcement office, updated discrimination complaint procedures, and other changes.”
The bill, which was named after George Floyd whose death while in police custody, sparked conversations on law enforcement and rest and generated national protests, some of which have led to unrest and violence, is not expected to clear the GOP-controlled U.S. Senate.
