The two flipped seats in South Florida mark a major victory for the GOP, and the party made real inroads in the 2020 elections in heavily blue South Florida.

The stakes could not be higher in the Sunshine State with its 29 electoral college votes.

The Florida Keys Electric Cooperative will be getting the bulk of the funds--$11,105,629.07--coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). 

Last week, Rubio, who sits on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the resolution “condemning the Maduro regime’s ongoing efforts to hold fraudulent legislative elections scheduled for this December” with the support of several senators including Scott and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, the top Democrat on the committee.

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., the chairwoman of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, teamed up with U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., to highlight the report. 

The letter highlights the debilitating health defects of smog and the disproportionate impact on communities of color. The EPA’s recent proposal is to maintain the 2015 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for smog, despite evidence that a more protective standard is needed.

Last month, with the support of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., brought out the “Set Sail Safely Act,” which, according to Scott’s office, “will establish a Maritime Task Force, in coordination with a Private Sector Advisory Committee, to address the health, safety, security, and logistical changes needed to allow for cruise lines and ports to resume operations.” 

Mucarsel-Powell, a member of the Congressional Mental Health Caucus, is championing the “Peer Assisted Relief Through Networks of Empathetic Resources and Supports (PARTNERS) Act” which will “provide resources and support to those requiring mental health aid by creating a National Peer Support Warmline under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to address rising mental health concerns.” The bill would ensure people who call the toll free number will be connected to a trained peer who will provide support and resources.

Back in January, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., the first Green Beret to serve in Congress, introduced the “United States-Israel PTSD Collaborative Research Act.”

Earlier this year, Mucarsel-Powell pressed FEMA for more help to help South Florida recover from Hurricane Irma which hit the region three years ago.

Rutherford wasn’t exactly a top target for Democrats but he did draw a top challenger in Donna Deegan.

“Le Jardin Community Center provides low-income children and families of diverse backgrounds opportunities to learn, develop, and increase their likelihood of success in the future,” the congresswoman’s office noted about the $2,387,473 HHS grant.
