This week, U.S. Rep. Ross Spano, R-Fla., announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is sending more than $4 million to Tampa Bay to help boost public transportation.

This marks the second major grant that DOT has sent to Lakeland Linder in recent months. Back in September, Spano, who sits on the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the U.S. House Aviation Subcommittee, announced DOT was sending $10.15 million to Lakeland Linder to improve its main runway and to reconstruct runway lighting.

The center will include a wellness plaza, a Zen garden, outdoor training turf, an outdoor classroom, indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor climbing wall, an indoor/outdoor demonstration kitchen, a daylight public concourse, childcare facilities and a sports performance area.

The designation, which U.S. Transportation Sec. Elaine Chao announced last week, also opens the door to more federal funds for the port which handled almost 300,000 tons of cargo last year with that number expected to be doubled this year. 

The bridge provides a critical link between Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral and State Road 405, especially in the transportation of significant payload components.

The money will be used to cut down on noise which has impacted almost 100 homes around the airport.

“Northeast Florida, with its intricate network of railways, highways, and ports, remains a hotbed for federal investment and economic growth,” said Rutherford. “Following other major awards to the region, this grant will ease congestion downtown and clear rail obstructions near major hospitals.

On Thursday, Mucarsel-Powell, who is wrapping up her first six months on Capitol Hill, announced that DOT is sending $360,000 to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to help make the runways Key West International Airport safer.
