In their letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, the senators ask what steps the department has taken to enforce compliance with FARA for Al Jazeera and are seeking documents related to the determination of AJ+’s foreign agent status. The senators are also asking what steps the department has taken to require Rightly to register under FARA. Those same lawmakers and others first raised concerns about Al Jazeera’s FARA compliance in 2019. 

U.S. Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio,, Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., are backing Rubio’s proposal.

In their letter to DOJ, the lawmakers noted examples of Al Jazeera’s activities that align closely with the priorities of the Qatari government. The letter also notes that other foreign state-owned media organizations with similar fact patterns and reach into the United States have recently been required to register as foreign agents.

Scott wants the agencies to look into the services to be performed and the source of the money paid to Amsterdam & Partners to determine if it violates the sanctions imposed against the Maduro regime and whether there is any effort to circumvent FARA regulations.

The letter was signed by more than 30 Republican members of Congress including U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott and U.S. Reps. Matt Gaetz, Bill Posey, Greg Steube, Michael Waltz and Ted Yoho from the Florida delegation.

Rubio wrote U.S. Attorney General William Barr, urging him to examine if Kerry’s meeting on the Iran nuclear deal violated either the Logan Act or the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
