Murphy said she would focus on building the Democratic Party in Florida instead of running against Rubio. 

Murphy, who worked at the U.S. Defense Department under President George W. Bush, will serve on the U.S. House Intelligence and Special Operations and the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittees which are both under the umbrella of the Armed Services Committee. The Central Florida congresswoman joined the committee this year.

In his new role, Soto “will be responsible for coordinating all whipping activities among caucus Members and presenting CHC positions to leadership in both parties.”

Soto announced his new role on Tuesday while Murphy is staying on as chair emeritus of the caucus. 

First elected to Congress in 2016 when she upset longtime U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., Murphy has tried to claim the center on Capitol Hill and her work on the U.S. House Armed Services and the Small Business Committees helped her on that front. So has her caucus memberships including helping lead the Democratic National Security Task Force, the Blue Dog Coalition and the Future Forum. Murphy is also a member of the New Democrat Coalition and the Problem Solvers Caucus which needled incoming U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as she tried to regain the gavel two years ago but eventually backed her after getting a few concessions.

The funds come from FEMA’s Public Assistance program. Seminole County will receive almost $14.5 million while Orlando will get $3 million. 

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy teamed up with U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Penn., a frequent legislative ally, to bring out the “Keep Congress Working Act” which  “would require Congress to remain in session and work if the government is shut down.”

On Thursday, sophomore U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., wielded the gavel in the U.S. House, becoming the first Vietnamese-American to lead the chamber as she served as speaker pro tempore. 

With her party now controlling the House, Murphy becomes the only Florida Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee and the first one to sit on it in almost a decade. 

Finishing up her first term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., had a successful 2018 and is increasingly one of the more prominent members of the Florida delegation despite her lack of seniority on Capitol Hill.
