Leaders from the Sunshine State cheered the quick action of President Donald Trump and Congress freeing up GI Bill benefits for veterans whose education was interrupted by the coronavirus crisis.
Bilirakis, the top Republican on the U.S. House VA Economic Opportunities Subcommittee, brought out the “Streamlining GI Bill Processing Act” this week with U.S. Rep. Mike Levin, D-Calif., the chairman of the subcommittee, as a cosponsor.
Last week, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., unveiled the “Modern GI Bill Act” which “allows veterans who are entitled to Post-9/11 educational assistance through the GI Bill to use eligible funds to repay federal student loans.”
Shalala's bill would ensure accreditors “respond to complaints, monitor and assess an institution’s records of student complaints, and submit such complaints to the Secretary and state agency as appropriate” and makes them “review teach-out plans and agreements when they see signs of a potential school closure.”
The bill was sent the House Veterans Affairs Committee last month and, so far, Dunn has not reeled in any cosponsors.
