Castor said that HUD was sending $3,075,937 to Tampa in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to help the city government deal with the continued coronavirus pandemic. The funds come from the $2.3 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that Congress and the White House agreed to at the end of March.

On Monday, as riots and protests continue across the nation in response to George Floyd’s murder, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he was calling up 700 members of the Florida National Guard soldiers and 1,300 Florida Highway Patrol troopers to support local law enforcement efforts.

Castor, who served more than three decades in law enforcement including six years as Tampa’s police chief, easily won the mayoral runoff on Tuesday, dispatching businessman David Straz.

Jane Castor was a heavy favorite after taking 48 percent in the first round early last month, just short of the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff. David Straz placed a distant second at 15.5 percent but survived to move on to the runoff.
