Risch, who leads Republicans on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the “Strengthening Trade, Regional Alliances, Technology, and Economic and Geopolitical Initiatives Concerning China Act (STRATEGIC Act),” a bill “which would help advance a strategy for U.S. competition with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).”

This week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., joined U.S. Sens. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., Pat Toomey, R-Penn., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, sent a letter to President Joe Biden outlining Republican policy on effectively addressing the challenge posed by Iran as the administration seeks to re-engage with the Iranian regime.

On February 1, the Burmese armed forces, also known as Tatmadaw, overturned the results of Burma’s November 2020 elections. They seized power in a military coup and detained the country’s democratically elected leaders, including State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. Previously, multiple international bodies, as well as investigators associated with the U.S. Department of State, have determined that there is evidence that the military-led abuses against the Rohingya people in Burma constitute crimes against humanity and genocide.

The resolution is also being backed by U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Mary., Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Jim Risch, R-Idaho.

At the end of last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., joined U.S. Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah,  and Jim Risch, R-Idaho, is sending a letter to U.S. Small Business Administrator Jovita Carranza urging for the inclusion of minor league sports venues in the new Small Business Administration (SBA) grant facility for shuttered venues. 

On Saturday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., and new U.S. Reps. Carlo Gimenez, R-Fla., and Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., wrote U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, the incoming chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.S. Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, the current chairman and slated to remain the top Republican on it, on the matter.

Rubio and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oreg., backed including a provision “that requires the Secretary of State to determine, within 90 days after enactment, whether the persecution of Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and members of other Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) constitutes atrocities." Earlier in the year, Rubio and U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., included similar language in their “Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.”

Rubio joined U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, the top Democrat on the committee, in a letter to the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. on the matter.
