Feeling shut out by President Donald Trump, Democrats in charge of the U.S. House--including those representing parts of Florida--are offering their own plan to help Venezuela even as they are careful not to speak about any kind of military intervention.
Trump also stressed that the U.S. was ready to help Venezuela with humanitarian aid to help the continued chaos in that South American nation but noted that the Maduro regime remained uncooperative.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio discussed the ongoing political developments in Venezuela, the new government of interim President Juan Guaidó, and next steps for U.S. policy.
On Tuesday, Mucarsel-Powell unveiled the “Humanitarian Assistance to the Venezuelan People Act” which “would call on the Trump Administration to form a long-term humanitarian aid strategy; provide up to $150 million in humanitarian aid directly to the Venezuelan people; and direct the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to make increased humanitarian assistance a priority of the international community.”
Rubio appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and NBC’s “Meet the Press" to praise Trump’s handling of Venezuela, even as opposition to the Maduro regime continues to grow.
With the Maduro regime arresting opposition leader Juan Guaidó, Scott called out the Venezuelan government on Monday and linked it to the communist regime in Cuba.
With Maduro starting a second term last week, Shalala said she will introduce a bill targeting exporting weapons and other defense materials to his regime while Wasserman Schultz said she plans to unveil “legislation that requires intelligence agencies to work with the U.S. State Department to develop threat assessments and strategic plans to monitor and combat the Kremlin’s influence in Venezuela.”
