On Friday, with the Senate trying to advance an appropriations bill and avoid a government shutdown, Rubio called on U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, to send U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) emergency appropriations for states affected by Hurricanes Florence and Michael as part of the final bill. 

Rubio is the chairman of the CECC and a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. He and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ, the cochairman of the CECC, held a hearing on “The Communist Party’s Crackdown on Religion in China” on Wednesday. 

Rubio teamed up with U.S. Sens. John Barrasso, R-Wy., Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., Chris Murphy, D-Ct., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, in bringing out a resolution condemning the attacks and calling for the release of Ukrainian sailors.

On Wednesday, Rubio urged Congress to pass a disaster supplemental bill for communities in North Florida impacted by Hurricane Michael last month.
