This week, with Scott onboard, the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee passed the $778 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)--around $25 billion higher than what the Biden administration first asked for.

The 65th Infantry, which mostly consisted of Puerto Ricans, was one of the most decorated units in the Korean War and its members were praised by Gen. Douglas MacArthur for their “brilliant record of heroism in battle.”

The senators urged Biden to include at least $1.5 billion each for two funds established by Congress to encourage the adoption of Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) equipment, which would allow additional vendors to enter the 5G market and compete with manufacturers like Huawei, which is heavily subsidized by the Chinese government.

With the U.S. House having impeached Trump for a second time, the Republican ranks on Capitol Hill are cracking though probably not enough to convict him in a trial in the U.S. Senate. 

On Saturday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., and new U.S. Reps. Carlo Gimenez, R-Fla., and Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., wrote U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, the incoming chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.S. Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, the current chairman and slated to remain the top Republican on it, on the matter. 

Trump vetoed the NDAA as it did not repeal Section 230 which protects internet companies from being sued over what is posted on their websites, either by them or by other parties. The president also vetoed the NDAA for renaming military bases honoring Confederate leaders.

Last week, both chambers of Congress passed the NDAA which exceeds $740 billion. President Donald Trump has said he will veto the NDAA unless it repeals Section 230 which protects internet companies from being sued over what is posted on their websites, either by them or by other parties. The president has also criticized the NDAA for renaming military bases honoring Confederate leaders. However, the NDAA cleared both chambers with veto-proof majorities. 

Rubio and U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, brought out the “Coast Guard Shore Infrastructure Improvement Act” in July 2019. Pairing up with U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., brought out the House version in June 2019. 

The U.S. House passed the NDAA on Tuesday on a 335-78 vote, more than the two-thirds majority to override a veto.
