Crist was elected governor in 2006 as a Republican. After leaving the GOP and running for the U.S. Senate in 2010 with no party affiliation, Crist joined the Democrats at the end of 2012. He narrowly lost the 2014 gubernatorial race to then Gov. Rick Scott. In 2016, Crist bounced back and defeated then U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla., to represent parts of Pinellas County in Congress.

This week, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill from state Sen. Lauren Book, D-Plantation, and state Rep. Randy Fine, R-Brevard County, to mandate “a uniformed statewide Holocaust education curriculum and education on the Ocoee Election Day massacre of 1920 in Florida’s public schools”
Bracy has dubbed his bill the “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act.”

On Election Day in 1920, the Central Florida town was gripped in violence as a massacre erupted when a black man named Mose Norman attempted to vote. The KKK responded by going to the home of July Perry, a prominent African-American in town, looking for Norman. The mob shot and killed Perry, hanging him from a tree and then burned an entire African American neighborhood.
