“In Florida, we are doing our part to expedite Everglades restoration projects and restore the flow of water south from Lake Okeechobee. Under my administration, we have expedited the EAA Reservoir Project, begun constructing the Stormwater Treatment Area 12 months ahead of schedule, and invested over $2 billion in water quality and Everglades funding,” said DeSantis.

“The EAA Reservoir Project is one of the most important Everglades restoration projects for reducing harmful discharges to the northern estuaries and sending more clean water south to the Everglades," Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office noted.

“The Army Corps has determined that discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the St. Lucie are unnecessary for flood control and that eliminating these discharges can actually be beneficial to water supply, the environment and more,” Mast said. “The Army Corps must not settle for incremental progress but rather should take the bold action needed to protect Floridians and stop government-sanctioned poisoning.”

On Tuesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the advancement of an Everglades restoration project to remove more than five miles of roadbed from Old Tamiami Trail.

The two grant recipients will be using the funding to implement enhanced nutrient removal technologies, water quality monitoring and data sharing and work to improve the relationship between environmental conditions and nutrient dynamics in Lake Okeechobee. These efforts will result in a better scientific understanding and management of nutrient conditions in Lake Okeechobee.

SFWMD is now working on the project site for the 6,500-acre treatment wetland component, known as a Stormwater Treatment Area (STA), of the EAA Reservoir Project.

In recent weeks, members of the Florida delegation urge Trump to include $250 million in funding for Everglades restoration in his FY2021 budget request. This request comes after last year’s Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020, which included $200 million for South Florida Ecosystem Restoration.
