Earlier in January, Diaz-Balart announced he was staying on as the top Republicans on the U.S. House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee. Last week, he said he was going to serve on the U.S. House Defense and the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittees.

Diaz-Balart had led the subcommittee when the GOP controlled the chamber and was the lead Republican on it over the past two years.

Diaz-Balart said the county would get $99.9 million from the federal government to help on the South Corridor Rapid Transit Project which is part of the SMART Plan. The money will come through a Federal Trade Administration (FTA) Capital Investment Grant (CIG) Program.

At the end of last week, U.S. Transportation Sec. Elaine Chao announced MARAD has awarded more than $280 million in grants through the new Port Infrastructure Development Program to help improve ports across the nation.

“Northeast Florida, with its intricate network of railways, highways, and ports, remains a hotbed for federal investment and economic growth,” said Rutherford. “Following other major awards to the region, this grant will ease congestion downtown and clear rail obstructions near major hospitals.

“Veterans’ homelessness is also a major problem,” Crist added. “Those who bravely answered the call to serve should never be without a roof over their heads. While the president’s budget zeroed out funding for veterans’ homelessness, we included $40 million to tackle the problem.
