This week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., introduced a resolution “remembering the 32nd anniversary of the violent repression of peaceful protests centered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square and expressing the sense of the Senate condemning the government of the People's Republic of China's ongoing denial of basic rights and fundamental freedoms.”
Other signers of the letter included U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Oreg., Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, Chris Murphy, D-Ct., Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Richard Blumenthal, D-Ct., Ben Sasse, R-Neb., Ed Markey, D-Mass., Thom Tillis, R-NC, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Pat Toomey, R-Penn. and Jeff Merkley, D-Oreg.
This week, Rubio and U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., who lead the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), issued the following statement on the 31st anniversary of the Chinese government and Communist Party’s violent crackdown against student-led protestors in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.
