In June, Rubio, along with several of his colleagues, wrote to Pai to request the FCC take a fresh look at Section 230 and clearly define the criteria for which companies can receive protections under the statute.

Patronis sent Scott a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) report “of Twitter following a July 2020 hack of high-profile accounts, including Former President Barack Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian" which “will support inquiries by the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, who recently voted to subpoena Big Tech CEOs including Twitter, Facebook, and Google.”

“The CEOs have not agreed to repeated requests to testify before the Committee on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which governs how online platforms moderate and display user-generated content,” noted the committee.  

Last week, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis sent a letter to Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, in regards to the recent hacking that Twitter experienced. This letter is a follow-up to the CFO’s request to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to investigate Twitter and partner with federal agencies to assess the state’s risk-level from the security breach.

This week’s Twitter hack looks to be one of the most widespread the platform has ever seen, attempting to elicit payments to an anonymous cryptocurrency account.

This request was made in light of recent troubling activities by social media companies, including partisan attempts to silence political speech and efforts to silence critics of the Chinese Communist Party.

At the end of last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., joined U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., in urging Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to end the company’s services to members of the Iranian regime, including the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif — both who have been sanctioned by the Trump administration.

“President Trump’s State of the Union address will be a much-needed reminder that outside the Washington, D.C. bubble there are millions of Americans who do not spend each day refreshing their Twitter accounts to see the latest ‘hot take,’” Rubio said.
