First elected to Congress in 2016, Crist has been on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee and the CJS Appropriations Subcommittee since 2019. He’ll serve under U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Penn., who chairs the subcommittee and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Ct., who leads the Appropriations Committee.
Crist has been a member of the Appropriations Committee since 2019, delivering funding for Pinellas including $13 million for research and mitigation efforts against red tide and other harmful algal blooms, $25 million for veteran treatment courts to get veterans into treatment instead of jail, and $5 million to get veterans into cutting-edge clinical trials at National Cancer Institutes like Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa – just last year alone.
Several Democrats in the Florida delegation are calling for congressional leadership to back funds for independent and small restaurants as part of any final COVID-19 stimulus deal.
Wasserman Schultz placed behind U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Ct., who will replace retiring U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-NY, as the chairwoman of the powerful committee. DeLauro had more support on the Appropriations Committee, on the Steering and Policy Committee and in the House Democratic caucus.
According to the congressman’s office, Crist asked the Corps to “provide flexibility to Pinellas County and maintain their commitment to work hand-in-hand with the county to replenish and preserve our coast” since the “Shore Protection Project, which serves to periodically renourish nearly 13 miles of Pinellas beaches, hit a major roadblock after the county was told by the Army Corps that they only have until the end of the year to secure hundreds of easements from property owners in order to continue the project.”
Rutherford wasn’t exactly a top target for Democrats but he did draw a top challenger in Donna Deegan.
Crist, who sits on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, said that DOJ is sending a $349,895 grant to Goodwill Industries to help the victims at a local level.
The new grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)--which come to $689,094--will help Community Health Centers with COVID-19 testing. Earlier this summer, Crist announced $1.1 million for Pinellas County and Community Health Centers of Pinellas for COVID-19 testing.
With 99 percent of the vote in, Rutherford had 80 percent of the vote. Educator and businessman Erick Aguilar had 20 percent.
The funds are part of the $2.3 trillion coronavirus stimulus package that the White House and Congress agreed to at the end of March. The funds will be distributed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
