The three South Florida Republicans are championing a proposal to “prioritize COVID-19 vaccine distribution to Taiwan and Latin American ally countries determined by the Secretary of State to have diplomatic, military, or cultural ties with the United States” and trying to send those vaccines before China does. 

As the pandemic continues to ravage multiple countries in the region, Latin America and the Caribbean already account for approximately one third of the total COVID-19 global death toll. 

The tiff started when White House spokesperson Jen Psaki singled out Florida as a place that had plenty of vaccines. DeSantis defended the state by explaining that what Florida has in stock are second doses already promised to seniors and that his administration would not renege on that promise for the booster shot.

“On the call today, we discussed progress on vaccine distribution to first responders as well as how firefighters can be an incredible asset in the war against the Coronavirus. With the vast majority of firefighters serving as paramedics and EMTs, local county health units have an incredible workforce that’s ready to step up and get these vaccines distributed in our communities."

At the end of February, Rubio teamed up with U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., a fellow member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on the resolution which also reaffirms the United States’ continued support for the Alliance as an efficient and effective mechanism to advance global health security and save lives.
