While he might be new to the Tallahassee campus--which is connected with Tallahassee Community College (TCC)--Riggs is no stranger to Flagler in general, having served as an associate professor of history and associate dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences of the college’s main campus in St. Augustine.
Last week, U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala, D-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Ross Spano, R-Fla., teamed up on the “Congressional Advisory Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics (CACIA) Act" which would create a “Blue-ribbon Congressional Commission to identify and examine issues of national concern related to the conduct of intercollegiate athletics and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).”
“Once more, Florida’s students have demonstrated their serious commitment to education as they continue to place third in the nation in Advance Placement (AP) test results,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis. “High school graduates who succeed in these AP courses are on the path to personal, academic and professional success and should be congratulated.”
The grant will be used to begin efforts “that will look for new ways to reach young people who are on the margins of society, culture and even the church.”
On Monday, DeSantis was at Ridgecrest Elementary School in Pinellas County to showcase STEM education, including visiting a camp run by Pinellas County School District’s STEM Academies program.
“We have long decried the endless issues associated with Common Core, and we are taking action to eliminate every last shred of it from Florida’s academic standards...," Corcoran said on Monday.
Noting that the 28 schools in the FCS ensure Florida is ranked second nationally by U.S. News and World Report, Florida TaxWatch unveiled its findings which showed that for every dollar invested in the system, Florida reaps between $10.80-15.42 in addition to thousands of new jobs.
In recent years, voters in several counties have been split over whether to elect a school superintendent or rely on an appointed one. From 2004 to 2017, voters in only three counties--Lake, Monroe and Polk Counties--abandoned having an elected school superintendent and moved to an appointed one.
Flagler College, which is based out of St. Augustine, had its accreditation reaffirmed by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) with no recommendations for improvement.
“It is wrong to threaten a borrower’s livelihood by rescinding a professional license from those who are struggling to repay student loans, and it deprives hardworking Americans of dignified work,” Rubio said.
