Results from a recent poll by Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey revealed that 59% of voters polled think that President Joe Biden is losing mental sharpness, and 61% suspect the media are trying to cover up the president’s cognitive decline.

An excerpt from Rasmussen’s summary reads: “Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters believe it’s likely that the news media are helping cover up evidence of President Biden’s declining mental sharpness, including 45% who consider such a cover-up Very Likely. Thirty-six percent (36%) don’t think it’s likely the media are trying to hide evidence of Biden’s mental decline, including 20% who say it’s Not At All Likely.”

According to Rasmussen’s data, more men (61%) than women (57%) see Biden as becoming less mentally sharp, but men are significantly more likely to think the media are hiding evidence of Biden’s decline.

Pundits may ultimately agree that one of the most remarkable aspects of the polls is how the belief in Biden’s mental decline transcends race. Majorities of every racial category – 59% of whites, 58% of black voters and 61% of other minorities – say that Biden is getting less and less mentally sharp over time.

When voters polled are categorized according to income, only 39% of voters in the highest bracket – earning more than $200,000 a year – believe that Biden’s mental sharpness is declining, whereas two-thirds (67%) of voters with annual incomes between $30,000 and $50,000 view Biden as becoming less and less mentally sharp over time.

The survey of 943 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on January 28-30, 2024 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
