The bill cleared the House without opposition on Monday and Serrano tipped his cap to a host of congressional leaders and former members of Congress including former U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who retired after the 2018 elections.
At the start of the week, U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., joined U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and U.S. Rep. José Serrano, D-NY, in writing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Peter Gaynor, calling on the federal government to help restore power to Puerto Rico.
The bill would let Puerto Ricans vote on whether they want statehood, much like they did in 2012 and 2017.
Soto, the first Florida congressman with ties to Puerto Rico, will pair up with two New York Democrats--U.S. Reps. José Serrano and Nydia Velázquez--to chair the Puerto Rico and Insular Areas Task Force. The Central Florida Democrat will also lead the CHC’s Civil Rights and Voting Rights Task Force. Soto will also sit on the Arts and Technology Task Force which is led by U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas, D-Calif.
