U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who sits on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, teamed up with members of Congress on Monday to issue a joint statement in response to the Chinese government’s decision to schedule a March 11 vote in the National People’s Congress that would impose new restrictions on Hong Kong’s electoral system.
The resolutions were introduced two weeks ago by Pennsylvania Republicans U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey and U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler. Diaz-Balart and U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, are the original co-sponsors in the House.
The proposal would also have the Small Business Administration (SBA) offer more training and assistance to small businesses in the program. Spano is the main co-sponsor of the bill.
U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., is one of the chairmen of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus. He and the other chairmen--U.S. Reps. Steve Chabot, Ohio, Gerry Connolly, D-Va., and Albio Sires, D-NJ--released a joint statement on the matter on Friday.
In their letter to DOJ, the lawmakers noted examples of Al Jazeera’s activities that align closely with the priorities of the Qatari government. The letter also notes that other foreign state-owned media organizations with similar fact patterns and reach into the United States have recently been required to register as foreign agents.
U.S. Rep. Judy Chu introduced the bill at the end of last week. Her legislation would take the Community Advantage Loan Program, which was set up as a pilot program back in 2011 “to provide low-interest loans to small businesses that have been historically underserved by loan providers, such as veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses” and reauthorize it through 2025.
Spano, who sits on the U.S. House Small Business Committee, joined U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, who leads Republicans on the committee, on a video conference call with six regional chambers of commerce.

Ted Yoho, R-Fla., who served more than three decades as a large animal veterinarian and is now the top Republican on the U.S. House Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee, is a key backer of a resolution to close live wildlife markets and urges the “Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to cease spreading disinformation regarding the origins of coronavirus (COVID-19).”
