Diaz-Balart is the top Republican on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee’s Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee, which funds this grant program for state and local governments under DOT.
The grant, provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will specifically fund the installation of a runway vertical guidance system and runway rehabilitation.
At the end of last week, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., wrote U.S. Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg urging the department to prioritize projects that keep Americans safe, while boosting the return on investment for every taxpayer dollar. In his letter, Scott highlighted the need for the department to address the insolvency of the Highway Trust Fund without raising taxes on the American people.
This announcement was applauded by Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez, Space Florida President and CEO Frank DiBello, NASA, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Sec. Kevin Thibault as well as space industry partners at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. This grant agreement will be used to enhance the connectivity and mobility of Florida’s Space Coast.
On Monday, Rubio joined more than 25 senators led by U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Mary., and U.S. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and is sending a letter to DOT and FAA urging them to fully implement two aviation workforce grant programs that were authorized in the 2018 FAA Reauthorization bill.
LYNX will use the funds to cover operating expenses, maintain service levels, and provide greater flexibility for transit personnel to take leave during the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds will also be used by LYNX to clean its buses and bus stations in order to minimize the chance that LYNX customers and employees could be exposed to COVID-19.
