Freshman U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala, D-Fla., who was president of Hunter College and the University of Miami and the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin, is backing the “Defending All Veterans in Education (DAVIE) Act” which, her office insisted, “closes the GI Bill loophole in federal law that allows for-profit colleges to take advantage of veterans and servicemembers.”
On Monday, DeSantis was at Ridgecrest Elementary School in Pinellas County to showcase STEM education, including visiting a camp run by Pinellas County School District’s STEM Academies program.
Last week, the U.S. Senate confirmed Rodney Smith on a 78-18 vote to serve as a federal district court judge for the Southern District of Florida. Florida’s two U.S. senators–Republicans Marco Rubio and Rick Scott–voted to confirm Smith.
“It is wrong to threaten a borrower’s livelihood by rescinding a professional license from those who are struggling to repay student loans, and it deprives hardworking Americans of dignified work,” Rubio said.
“After the terrorist attack at Pulse nightclub, my office was able to assist one young man who suffered injuries that may have prevented him from pursuing his career, ultimately making it difficult for him to repay his student loans on time,” Rubio said.
Taylor had been serving in the post on an interim basis since the middle of April when Ralph Yoder, who led schools in Calhoun County for around six and a half years, was tapped as executive director of the Florida Transportation Commission.
USF beat out more than 50 applicants across the nation for the funds which will be used for “advancing research and education programs that address the nation’s critical transportation challenges.”

Florida State University (FSU) is joining dozens of other schools across the nation in using a new format called “adversity scores” which are designed to measure a student’s past in terms of dealing with social and economic issues.
