This week, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., who sits on the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced that airports in South Florida will get more than $342 million in federal funds from the stimulus package that the White House and Congress agreed to at the end of last month.
In April 2017, during his first months in Congress, Crist introduced the “Best to Use Safety (BUS) Belts Act” which would mandate that all new school busses have seat belts. Crist worked on the issue when he served in the Florida Senate in Tallahassee.
The representatives want “aviation excise taxes be suspended until the end of 2021 or until airline passenger traffic returns to 75 percent of its 2019 levels, citing current airlines passenger levels of only 25 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels.”
The average gallon of gas in Florida cost $2.40 on Sunday, up 10 cents from the start of last week and matching the national average. This is the highest price at the pump in Florida over the past 11 months.
"Gas prices have held relatively steady through the first half of April," said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group. "However, some upward pressure appears to be moving back into the market, which could affect prices at the pump. Oil prices jumped 6 percent last week, in hopes that demand will continue to grow due to increased COVID-19 vaccinations, lower jobless claims in the U.S. and rising consumer sentiment."
State Sen. Annette Taddeo, D-Miami, sent a letter to Scott on Tuesday, urging “an immediate investigation into Conduent State & Local Solutions, Inc. - the contractor responsible for administering and managing the SunPass electronic tolling system.
Along with local officials including Miami Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Kevin Thibault, DeSantis “visited the construction site of the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project in Miami to listen to the concerns and suggestions of local officials regarding the transportation needs of the city and the state.”
“Floridians are eagerly anticipating the start of summer, and gas prices should not be a deterrent,” said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group.
While the price of gas rose across the Sunshine State in the past week, AAA expects it to drop in the coming days.
