Rutherford is following in the footsteps of another First Coast Republican. Former U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., was a co-chair of the caucus during his decade and a half on Capitol Hill.
With 97 percent of the vote in, Rutherford took 61 percent while Democrat Donna Deegan, well known on the First Coast for her role in fighting breast cancer and her work as a TV anchor, got 39 percent.
Rutherford wasn’t exactly a top target for Democrats but he did draw a top challenger in Donna Deegan.
With two more congressmen bowing out on Monday, 20 Republicans in the U.S. House will not run for reelection in 2020--but the new departures shouldn’t have much of an impact in the Sunshine State.
The current Republicans in the Florida delegation offer a host of new faces even when compared to only a few years ago. That being the case, don’t expect many Republican retirements in the Florida delegation--but there could be a handful of them.
“I am eager to continue my role on the Appropriations Committee to ensure that precious taxpayer dollars are spent wisely while working to promote our national priorities, like a robust national defense, a secure border, and enhanced resources for our veterans,” Rutherford said.
