In the letter to the leaders of the U.S. Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the members urged the committee to provide robust funding for key restoration projects, citing the importance of the Everglades ecosystem for providing clean drinking water to 8 million Floridians, creating jobs, and supporting the regional economy.

This funding would build upon the $250 million for Everglades restoration that Scott fought for and secured from the Trump administration last year and ensure continued support for federal and state efforts to preserve and protect Florida’s environment for future generations.

The Florida Department of Transportation and Everglades National Park “will oversee this critical project to improve water flow to one of the most over-drained wetlands within the Greater Everglades watershed.” The contract will be going to General Asphalt Jones Benitez Joint Venture.

“One of my administration’s top environmental priorities has been expediting Everglades restoration,” DeSantis said on Wednesday. “Today we take another step in the right direction by reaching this agreement between DEP and Kanter Real Estate that will allow for the purchase of 20,000 acres of critical wetlands.

“Removing the roadbed improves the volume of water flowing south through the Everglades into Everglades National Park,” the governor’s office noted. Recently, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued the required permit for the project.
