“The Passenger Rail Improvement, Modernization and Expansion (PRIME) grant program is a new $19 billion program ‘devoted entirely to passenger rail improvements and expansion, performance optimization, and intercity passenger rail transportation expansion,’” Demings’ office noted. “Access to the federal PRIME grant program—along with U.S. Department of Transportation transparency and oversight of these funds—is important to the construction of high-speed passenger rail connecting major population and economic centers throughout Florida.”
The bill, which covers Defense; Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; Financial Services and General Government; Labor-HHS-Education, and Transportation-HUD funding, cleared the House on a 217-197 vote as 12 Democrats joined every Republican and U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, I-Mich., in voting against it.
State Sen. Debbie Mayfield, R-Indialantic, and state Rep. Tyler Sirois, R-Merritt Island, teamed up on the “Florida High-Speed Passenger Rail Safety Act” which “incorporates recommendations identified in a study commissioned by the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA).”
