With young Floridians ready to go back to school, state Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis is urging families to look at how student loans will impact their financial futures.
Corcoran scored some wins during the 2019 legislative session, including expanded school choice, leading the nation when it comes to higher ed for the third year in a row, eliminating Common Core, finding new ways to gather input on education standards and Florida students scoring well on Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
Noting that medical marijuana businesses continue to grow after 2016 when Florida voters added Amendment 2 to the state Constitution, Patronis said Congress needs to change how banks handle accounts from these enterprises.
Patronis announced that S&P “raised the fund quality rating on the Florida Treasury Investment Pool to AA- from A+” and pointed to the “quality of investment, comparison with other funds with similar composition, and sound management by CFO Patronis’ Division of Treasury as the reasons why they made this change.”
This week, Patronis looked ahead to the upcoming legislative session, saying he wanted to focus on helping Panhandle residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael which devastated that area last month. Patronis also said he plans to focus on the high rate of cancer among firefighters.
With the Prepaid College Board meeting, Patronis’ office noted that “data now shows that student loan debt is a $1.5 trillion crisis, with an average student in the Class of 2016 owing more than $37,000 and a default rate of more than 10 percent” and urged families to use the Prepaid College Program.
