Buchanan weighed in on the bill after Schakowsky introduced it on Wednesday. While he noted slaughtering horses for human consumption is currently banned, Buchanan stressed that it is only temporary and horses can be taken to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered, citing numbers that more than 37,000 of them were exported to slaughterhouses last year. 

Buchanan introduced the bill this month and highlighted it on Thursday, insisting it will “streamline drug development and spur innovation without resorting to inhumane and counterproductive experiments on dogs, primates and other animals.”

Back in October, Hastings introduced the “Humane Research and Testing Act” with Buchanan as a co-sponsor. While they did not their bill over the finish line last time out, they brought it back this week.

Buchanan weighed in on the award on Thursday as he was one of 34 members of Congress to earn the highest ranking from the Humane Society in 2019. 

U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., wrote President Donald Trump on the matter last week, following up on a letter they sent him back in April. They called on Trump to call fro China to ban live animal markets. Back in November, the two congressmen teamed up with U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oreg., to introduce a resolution “calling on all nations to end their dog and cat meat trade and to enforce existing laws against the trade.”

This week, President Donald Trump signed into law a bill from two congressmen from Florida–Democrat U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch and Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan–cracking down on animal cruelty and torture.
